About Us

Who We Are

The Northeast E-Learning Consortium is regional user group which is comprised of institutions of higher education as well as some businesses. The Organization primarily serves the greater Philadelphia educational community as well as the tri-state area including Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, and New York.

The group was founded in 2004 in a collaborative effort between Villanova University, Drexel University and Bucks County Community College. The original title of the group was NEWUG (Northeast WebCT Users Group). Villanova created a Listserv (newug-teach@list.villanova.edu and newug-tech@list.villanova.edu) to facilitate communications for the organization.

Learning about Learning Management Systems

After Blackboard acquired WebCT in February 2006, due to the uncertainty of the vendor market as well as the increased prominence of open source systems such as Moodle and Sakai, the leaders decided to take an agnostic approach by changing the title of the Organization from the Northeast WebCT Users Group to the Northeast E-Learning Consortium.

Annual Meetings

Villanova has served in a leadership role in promoting NEELC. Villanova hosted the first two annual fall meetings, on Wednesday, October 12, 2005 and on Friday, November 3, 2006. Subsequent meetings were rotated at other member institutions including La Salle University (’09), Thomas Jefferson University (’10), Wilmington University (’11), Temple University (’12) and most recently at the University of the Sciences (Dec. ’13).
We have included the Consortium for events such as our LMS Day in the fall of 2010 as well as other vendor presentation. By extending the invitation to the Consortium members, it makes it more attractive for a vendor to make the trip to Villanova as they will be able to reach representatives from various institutions. We also receive valuable feedback from our peer institutions. Blackboard sponsors the majority of our events. Richard Wack provides representation for the Group on the Blackboard Users Group, Leaders Group (BUGLUG).

At this time there are 194 unique subscribers from 100 institutions represented on the listserv from twelve states including the District of Columbia as well as representation from Institutions in Canada. Please refer to the table below see the breakdown.
